Introduction
Building Web sites has changed, and someone forgot to tell the architects. Web browsers’ support for modern techniques has allowed a new degree of discipline and control in coding the front end of a Web site. These new best practices are those dictated in what is commonly referred to as “Web standards-based” design or development. A Web standards-based approach has countless benefits. The larger or more complex a Web presence, the more critical Web standards become. This is particularly true for an enterprise with many different properties, channels, or brand considerations. Add to this the prospect of critical Web-based applications and content management, and it becomes a man-date to ensure a high level of quality at every tier of an online presence.
This review describes the Adapting to Web Standards: CSS and Ajax for Big Sites book by Christopher Schmitt et al. produced by New Riders. The books aim is to teach people about the importance of web standards and provide practical case study examples of web standards development in practice. I would say the book is intended for those familiar with producing content for the web but not really aware of how to successfully put web standards to use in their work. The authors of the book have all been working within the web domain for many years and have a large amount of experience collectively. Indeed many of the authors have the experience of working on large web projects with organisations such as AOL, Paypal, the US State Department and O’Reilly publishing. In my opinion, the book provides a very good description of the importance of web standards and the case studies provided may prove of interest to those in a similar position. I don’t however feel the case studies are as well thought through as the early part of the book which was perhaps easier to control in terms of content and focus.
The 280 page book consists of two parts containing seven chapters in total and multiple appendices. The first part of the book focuses on the techniques and technologies for constructing standards based web sites and the second part of the book focuses on providing the reader with examples of web standards in practice. There is a related web site to the book although at present it doesn’t contain a great deal of content this includes not containing any downloadable content demonstrating the code from the book in action which I feel is a real shame. The book is fairly easy to read and has a clear focus especially for the first part of the book. They may have been better off demonstrating the part 1 materials in demonstrable practical projects in the second half of the book rather than providing descriptive content of web standards in practice, however, the second part of the book at least makes the content fairly dissimilar from other texts in the field.
Overall, the book succeeds in demonstrating the power and importance of web standards but cannot sit on its own as a more practical book could perhaps have done. The book acts as an additional resource for the web developer providing them with more advanced techniques in relation to integrating web standards within their work. I would recommend the book to developers tasked with large web standards based projects as I do feel there is a lot to learn through the eyes of the experienced developers in the book. However, I feel that for the student beginner they would not gain a great deal from the text.
